The start of a new season is always a good opportunity to revive nice memories of the previous one. Our minds immediately take us back to March 2024 aboard Grego's camper van, heading for the Simplon.

First arrivals and first lesson: just because it snowed a metre doesn't necessarily mean the conditions are good. It was as windy as it was snowy, and the troop's enthusiasm died down faster than the avalanche danger. Lesson number 2: just because the snowpack is unstable doesn't mean the holiday is a failure.

As long as you've got a camper van, a game of Jass, a few bottles of pinot noir from the Abbaye de Salaz, Mikkele Go-miyo and his famous ‘Alaska Soup’ recipe, it can rain horizontally, it's still the place to be.

Ok, all the faces we'd dreamed of riding were far too exposed to be attempted, but we're being a bit choosy; the weather was fine and there were still a few good pockets of powder!

In short, camping-car is great, especially when you have access to the running water at the hospice (thanks to the canons' team), when your socks have time to get some fresh air and sun before dark and your room-mates are as organised as your father-in-law at the Grande Motte camping.

We look forward to new adventures in the Alps this winter!
